🎨 Canva to Print. Perfected.
Design It Right. Export It Right. Print It Beautifully.
Creating your artwork in Canva? We've got you covered! Follow this guide to prepare your designs for DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing and achieve sharp details, vibrant colors, and professional-quality transfers. Whether you're creating a single graphic or building an entire gang sheet, proper file preparation is essential.
📐 Set Up Your Canvas at the Correct Size
Start with the size you actually want to print.
Before designing, open Canva and select Create a Design → Custom Size.
- Choose inches as your measurement unit.
- Enter your desired final print width and height.
- Create your artwork within those dimensions.
- For gang sheets, use the exact width and length of the sheet you're ordering.
Want your graphic printed at 11 inches wide by 12 inches tall? Create your Canva design at exactly 11" × 12".
Ordering a 22" × 60" gang sheet? Create your Canva canvas at exactly 22" × 60".
Always design at your intended print dimensions. Enlarging a small, low-resolution design later can cause blurry or pixelated results.
🖼️ Use High-Quality Artwork
Your finished transfer can only be as good as the artwork you provide.
For the best printing results:
- Use high-resolution graphics and images.
- Aim for approximately 300 pixels per inch at your final print size.
- Use crisp, clean artwork with clearly defined edges.
- Double-check all spelling, text, and important details.
- Make sure designs aren't stretched, distorted, or blurry.
- Avoid screenshots, tiny images enlarged significantly, and heavily compressed graphics.
Canva's export size and your original artwork quality both matter. Exporting at a larger size does not automatically improve a low-resolution image.
✨ Prepare a Transparent Background
DTF printing requires transparency wherever you don't want ink printed.
A white background is not the same as a transparent background. If white is included in your artwork, it may print as part of your transfer.
📤 How to Export a Transparent PNG from Canva
- 1 Open your completed Canva design.
- 2 Click Share in the upper-right corner.
- 3 Select Download.
- 4 Under File Type, select PNG.
- 5 Enable Transparent background.
- 6 Confirm your export size and page selection.
- 7 Click Download.
Selecting Transparent background does not automatically remove a white background embedded inside an uploaded JPG, photo, or flattened graphic.
If your artwork already contains a background, remove it first using Canva's Background Remover or another image-editing tool.
A transparent area may appear as a gray-and-white checkerboard in image-editing software. That checkerboard represents transparency, not printed artwork.
Note: Canva's transparent-background export option may require a qualifying paid plan.
📏 Double-Check Your Final Export Size
🚨 THIS STEP IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!
When downloading your artwork from Canva, you'll see a Size setting in the PNG export window.
This setting controls the pixel dimensions of your downloaded file.
Your exported artwork must maintain the same intended physical dimensions and proportions as your original Canva design or gang sheet.
An 11" × 12" Canva design should still be printed at 11" × 12".
A 22" × 60" Canva gang sheet should remain 22" × 60" when printed.
🔍 Understanding Canva's Export Size Setting
Canva may display a size multiplier such as 1×, 2×, or 3×, along with the resulting pixel dimensions.
Default export pixel dimensions
Double the pixel width and height
Triple the pixel width and height
Increasing the multiplier creates a file with more pixels, but does not change the physical print size you intended when the file is interpreted at the correct dimensions.
📐 Example: 11" × 12" Artwork
An 11" × 12" design exported at 2× is still intended to print at 11" × 12", not 22" × 24".
For approximately 300 pixels per inch, an 11" × 12" final print would ideally contain about 3300 × 3600 pixels.
Do not assume Canva's default 1× export automatically produces 300 PPI.
Review the exported pixel dimensions and confirm they're sufficient for your intended print size.
Your Canva design dimensions, export pixel dimensions, and intended print dimensions must all align.
🧩 Preparing a Canva Gang Sheet
Multiple designs. One sheet. Maximum efficiency.
Gang sheets allow you to place multiple designs together on one sheet. Here's how to prepare yours correctly.
- 1 📐 Create your Canva canvas using the exact gang sheet dimensions you're purchasing.
- 2 🎨 Arrange your graphics within the sheet boundaries.
- 3 ↔️ Leave enough space between designs for cutting.
- 4 🔍 Check each graphic for clarity, correct sizing, and placement.
- 5 🖼️ Make sure the sheet background is transparent.
- 6 📤 Export the complete sheet as one high-quality PNG.
- 7 📏 Verify that the exported file represents your intended gang sheet dimensions.
If your gang sheet is 22" × 84", your Canva design should also be 22" × 84".
Do not stretch, crop, or change the sheet's proportions when exporting or uploading.
Leave a little space between graphics so each transfer can be easily separated after printing.
🔍 Review Your File Before Uploading
